Statement Responding to the Planning Committee Decision 25/04/24

We acknowledge Suffolk County Council's decision to refuse planning permission for the Copland Biogas anaerobic digestion facility near Beccles on 25th April.

We are deeply disappointed having adapted our plans through the process in line with feedback received from consultees and the public. Our team will reflect on the feedback to determine our plans moving forward.

We are also dismayed by the Council’s unwillingness to support vital private investment in renewable energy infrastructure for the people of Suffolk and condemn them to the massive uncertainty of the global energy markets. This decision also impedes the County’s ability to sustainably process the food waste that must be collected separately, by law, by 31st March 2026 and will increase the burden on council taxpayers even further.

The decision provides yet another example of the UK’s inability to see through its policy commitments in terms of reducing harmful Greenhouse Gas emissions, improving our nation’s energy security, and delivering on net zero.

We remain steadfast in our belief that anaerobic digestion is a vital technology needed across the UK to deliver a balanced energy infrastructure whilst addressing climate change, promoting a circular economy and preventing unavoidable food waste from going to landfill. It is a simple fact that Wind and Solar renewable schemes will not deliver all of our nation's energy needs a fact recognised by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ).

We remain dedicated to developing projects that align with our mission of creating responsible and sustainable renewable energy solutions.
